About Key WestKey West is located in the southernmost point of the Florida Keys in Monroe County, Florida. Key West is 129 miles (3 hour drive) south of Miami, and 90 miles north of Cuba. The island is a very popular destination for cruise ships to stop as they travel through the Caribbean. You can fly into the Key West airport from Miami after boarding a smaller plane. It's a short hop that takes about 30 minutes. Key West is known for its great history tours of local museums, national parks and supposedly haunted hotels for entertainment. Hotels fill quickly for many festivals during the year. No event fills up the hotels or the bars, like Fantasy Fest. Tourist attractions such as parasailing, and kayak rentals are relaxing ways to forget your troubles back home. A massage at a spa, a walk on the beach, or even your own suite can easily help you relax in Key West. Downtown (Oldtown) is the area surrounding the main street named Duval Street, and includes much of the southwest corner of the island along Whitehead, Front, Greene, and Truman Avenue. The island is only two by four miles. The remaining part of the island (Newtown) is mainly residential with a hotel or motel along the water and beach. Many visitors consider the southernmost beach also known as south beach, the best beach on the island. It's surrounded by luxury resorts and has a cafe with spectacular views. |
